I hate this question ... because I don't really have an answer!!

So many bags, so little time and money to buy them all. That's my dilemma every Season: what to do? Splurge in the new IT bag? Keep on with my beloved Gucci from last season?

These are my favorite 5 handbags of this and all seasons (in no specific order, really, these are all great bags):

1. Gucci Signoria - a real show stopper!

2. Marc Jacobs Stam bag - classical beauty, goes with everything

3. Miu Miu Coffer Bag - I have it in ivory, the perfect summer arm candy

4. Jimmy Choo Ramona - if Posh has one, I have to have one, too!

5. Louis Vuitton Monogram Manhattan - I just love it, the epitome of fashion and style!

Would You Buy a Fake Handbag?

One of my educational backgrounds is in journalism. Although I've never really put it into practice, the skills I learned during my studies have come very handy on several occasions... and last week was one of those.

All came as an idea after a heart-to-heart chat with a good friend who is involved in a very successful online shop that sells replica handbags. She knows that there is a good market out there but still wanted to get a feeling of what girls feel when they go for the fake instead of the real thing.

So armed with my phone book (OK, my Nokia's phone list) and a few hours to spare over the weekend, I called 28 women I know (or I know their phone numbers) and asked them if they have ever bought, or even considered buying a replica bag.

The conclusion was very interesting. I was expecting a 50-50% situation, where some of my very snob friends (yes, I've got some of those) would never give up a trip to Paris specifically tailored to buy the latest Louis Vuitton "IT" bag for a fake.

But ... guess what?! An amazing 75% (Or 21 of them) said YES ...they've bought a replica handbag (actually 6 of them had used my friend's online shop) and 24 of them (85%) said they will buy again or they will consider buying one in the future!

So there you go ... what about you? Would you?

One of the beauties of shopping online is that you don't need to speak! Not that I don't know how (my friends are witness to that!), but it can be embarrasing when you don't know how to pronounce correctly the brand of your dreams!

I mean, what can be worse than trying to buy a lovely Louis Vuitton handbag or an Yves Saint Laurent dress and hearing the shop assistant correct your French?!

I have seen people asking for a Mui Mui instead of a Miu Miu handbag ... and what about "Parda" instead of Prada? One thing is being dyslexic and other proving to be a total disaster with pronunciation!

You can rent a car and rent a DVD — but rent a handbag?

Thanks to the Internet and Americans' infatuation with high-end designer handbags, rent-a-bag is a concept that a growing number of women are embracing.

Because who really has closet space for scores of handbags? Why spend the equivalent of a mortgage payment on a bag that might languish in the closet after one season? How do you get the next "It" bag for a special occasion?

Today there are two websites operating in the USA — BagBorrowOrSteal.com and FromBagsToRiches.com — plus at least three in Britain, one in Germany, one in Australia and one in Canada. Although neither U.S. site will say exactly how many, the sites are believed to be renting thousands of bags a month to women all over the country.

"It's a great idea," says Jennifer MacNeish, 42, of Melrose, Mass., who has rented dozens of bags in the past year from BBOS. "You can spend a lot of money buying handbags, and no matter how fabulous the bag, a month later you want the next one."

The two sites are differ in some details: BBOS, for instance, has a vintage-bag curator who buys expensive designer bags, such as an Hermès Crocodile Birkin bag available to rent for up to $6,010 a month (to get a new one you have to join a years-long waiting list). FromBagsToRiches also operates a related consignment site, called BagBanco.com, where women can sell their used handbags and get back up to 80% of the sale.

"Women feel empowered" by toting designer brands, says Samuel Mangiere, chairman of FBTR. "It's not about ownership, it's about the experience of having a designer bag for even a brief period of time."

CondeNast Portfolio.com ran an interesting story on a report by the Luxury Institute of New York.

They interviewed 800 consumers in the USA with an average net work of $2.2 million and identified the most 'recognizable' bags by this wealthy bunch.

Number one was Coach recognized by 75% of them. Second came Louis Vuitton handbags with 63% and then Gucci handbags with 61%. Funny enough, any Coach bag is at least 1/2 of the price of a Gucci and we are talking about filthy rich people here!

Bottom of the list? Hermes!! I am sure Madame Beckham must be scratching her head over this one ... but again, this was an American and not a British survey.

Handbags, next to diamonds and maybe shoes, are a woman's best friend. Not only are they used to hold everything that we hold dear, from our cellular phones to our credit cards, our palm pilots to the papers that will spell the difference between promotion and demotion. Let's face it, can you imagine a world without the women's handbag as we know it?

Today, women handbags are not only "receptacles" of your prized possessions but also fashion statements. Handbags are often used to express moods, individuality, style and status. And even though, it is not really worn so close to the body like blouses, skirts and jeans, there are still shapes and styles of women's handbags that may be flattering and unflattering to a person. Believe it or not, the handbag that you carry can actually add on or lessen the weight that you appear to carry.

Read on and find out just how to choose the perfect shape, size and style of women handbag that will fit your body type and personal style.

Look at the shape.

Choose the shape that is opposite your body type. For instance, if you are tall and thin, look for bags that are more on the rounded side like the hobo or those that are a bit unstructured. This will complement your figure as it would provide a sharp contrast to your body. If on the other hand, you are on the short and heavy side, it is good to carry women handbags that are tall, rectangular or those with really defined shapes. Long and sleek designs will help counterbalance your more rounded figure. Of course, there is no need to buy women handbags that are absolutely reed thin or those with really sharp edges. Silhouettes in soft fabrics and leathers can do the trick. Just remember to stay away from women handbags with rounded designs.

Think of the size

The size of your bag should complement your size. While the shape should be contrasting and complementing, the size should be in proportion. Using these kinds of women handbags are discouraged for people who have big arms and big busts as the short handles tend to emphasize the large sizes. Remember that the length of the handbag or shoulder bag will always accentuate the part it comes near with. If, for instance, the bag hits your bottom half or hip area, then that area of your body will become more focused as the eyes are naturally drawn to it.

Most women look great with handbags and shoulder bags that end in mid-torso as it flatters the waist. To determine if the length of the strap fits you, try it out. If your arm feels cramped, then
it is too short. Try out the bag in the mirror and see for yourself if the bag is flattering to you.

But I loved her thoughts on the must-have 2009 product: "A classic handbag is a must-have item. It's something to invest in as it lasts forever. You can change your clothes size and wear out your shoes but you will always have your handbag."

There is an economic slump, yes we know that much. We are all tightening our belts while the price of commodities go up ... petrol and gold have reached rocket high levels while real estate value is plummeting.

I love it!! ... I love the Louis Vuitton Monogram Jokes Graduate handbag for LV's Spring 08 Collection that I had to wait two months for my local LV boutique to source it for me from another country!

Don't faint, but I paid almost 2,000 EUR for it (please don't tell my husband -- lol)

£553 million spent on handbags in the UK only

A British consumer research company has released figures related to the size of the fashion handbag market in the UK.

It reports that handbag sales between 2002 and 2007 soared 139% reaching £468 million in 2007. In 2008 handbag sales are expected to reach £553 million and in the past 12 months, roughly 55% per cent of British women bought a new handbag.

I have also read somewhere (the online version of an English newspaper) that the designer handbag market is on its way out, that the "IT" bag frenzy is about to die and that English women are ready to stop buying designer bags as they become more price-minded.

I always respect other peoples' opinions, but it seems clear to me that the figures speak for themselves: 18% growth/year is subtantial and £553 million is a lot of money ... where is it gonna go if English women stop buying designer bags? ... to belts?
